C# Online.NET Software Review

As the saying goes, "Buy the premise and you buy the bit." In other words, with every major Microsoft release like Visual Studio 2005, you are not getting simply a new productivity tool; but, you are tacitly accepting the Microsoft strategic agenda. In fact, you are being actively recruited. The extended Start Page, for example, is a recruiting poster: "Microsoft needs You!"

Developers need to be aware of the implications of the choices they are making when selecting tools with built-in application models. In many ways, the tool defines the problem. It's a productive path and a smooth ride; but, all roads lead to Rome.

The approach taken in Visual Studio 2005 is platform-driven. Its purpose is to serve as a gateway to .NET packages and services from various developer communities each with its own view of .NET. Visual Studio attempts to relate the choice of programming language with software tasks and programmer capabilities.

This contrasts with premium Java IDEs which are language-driven, offering synchronized views for maximizing language use. But, what choices do Windows .NET developers have? Java developers can choose from Eclipse, JBuilder, and NetBeans.

Here are some Visual Studio 2005 features:

  • More fully featured, but slower than Visual Studio 2003.
  • Highly customizable from the outset.
  • New reactoring facilities—rename!
  • Code snippets facility—language-level shortcuts.
  • Easy-to-use data source and other new components.
  • Rapidly growing number of third-party plug-ins and extensions.

It seems that Microsoft is trying hard to catch up to the existing capabilities of the premium Java IDEs; but, they're not there yet.

Bottom line

Visual Studio 2005 is the IDE for Windows .NET developers.
