What is social bookmarking?

A social bookmark is the URL entry of a Web site in a shared list of user-created, Internet bookmarks. Social bookmarking is an increasingly popular method of classifying, locating, ranking, and sharing Internet resources through the practice of tagging: Typically, social bookmarking sites organize content using tags. A social bookmarking site named del.icio.us started the ball rolling in 2003.

Social bookmarking sites enable users to create lists of Internet resources stemming from personal interest. Although there may be a private option, normally, these lists are publicly accessible. Resources are categorized by the use of user-defined keywords or tags. Most social bookmarking sites enable users to search for bookmarks with specified tags. Bookmarked resources can be ranked by the number of users who have bookmarked them. Some social bookmarking services implement inference algorithms to draw higher order conclusions from the tag keywords.

Tag-based classification of Web sites is done by individual human beings—not search engine robots—who understand the resource content. The more useful Web sites tend to be bookmarked by more users. So, social bookmarking systems rank a resource based on its apparent utility.

Many social bookmarking services enable users to subscribe to RSS syndication feeds based on tags or collections of tags. Thus, subscribers are apprised of new resources for a given topic as soon as they are bookmarked—socially—by other users.
