C# Online.NET Book Review

Read a chapter from the book!

Peter Thiel and Max Levchin founded Confinity in 1999 which was destined to become PayPal. Paypal is a system for sending and receiving funds over the Web—serving as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders. It went public in 2002 only to be snapped up by eBay.

There are many ins and outs both to doing secure e-commerce over the Internet and, specifically, in doing business via PayPal. This book attempts to provide all the information you need to do both; and, it succeeds admirably. In fact, you could gather most of the information yourself from Web sources. However, the author has saved us all the time and bother of assembling the various resources, consolidating them, verifying them, and making them readable and understandable. PayPal is a bigger topic than most would realize at first brush. Actually, one can be certified in PayPal.

The ideal reader for this book is a corporate manager, e-commerce developer, or small business person in search of an overall understanding of PayPal transaction processing solutions. The book helps sort through the various options and select a development path. Probably, every reader will want to read the first nine chapters. After that, each reader will pursue their own interests in the following chapters.

This book is designed to help the reader choose and implement a secure, PayPal solution to a variety of merchant problems. And, it is packed with practical suggestions and source code samples. The book is comprehensive in that it covers the array of solutions offered by PayPal and its acquisitions over the years including the latest Name-Value Pair Interface (NVI) API.

Developers will find the information they need on all available PayPal payments options from the PayPal account, basic and encrypted Web site payments, the PayPal API, postpayment processsing. Also covered in detail are Instant Payment Notification (IPN), Payflow Link and Payflow Pro, Payment Data Transfer (PDT), and SOAP.

The author's style is very knowledgeable but matter-of-fact. He works for PayPal and he is a certified Java developer. His style is very readable and concise. Of course, his basic perspective is that of a Java developer; but, he provides examples in any language a would-be merchant is likely to use.

Most source code examples are available in the C#, Java, PHP, and Visual Basic (VB) languages. This is both a strength and a weakness for the book.

Bottom line

Pro PayPal E-Commerce is a comprehensive guide and reference to conducting e-commerce using PayPal payment processing methods.
